IBM denies it was at fault in Arizona election problem
By The Associated Press
PHOENIX (AP) – A tech company that provided software services for Arizona’s voter registration system says the state’s top elections official is wrong to blame it for delays in sending publicity pamphlets to hundreds of thousands of voters before the special election last week.
At least 400,000 voters went without the guides, which provide detailed language of propositions and arguments for and against the measures, for more than two weeks after they received early ballots for the May 17 election.
IBM failed to respond adequately when asked how to use the voter database to compile mailing lists, said Matt Roberts, a spokesman for Secretary of State Michele Reagan. But company representatives said her office is responsible for taking the proper mailing list of voters from the registration system.
IBM’s contract expired at the end of February, about two months before Reagan’s office learned of the pamphlet problem, the Arizona Capitol Times reported.
