Tucson Police Department detectives have continued their investigation into an officer involved shooting in which a bicyclist 33-year-old Osee Calix was killed. Police claim he was riding his bicycle northbound on the sidewalk of N. Columbus Blvd., in violation of Arizona traffic laws.
Prior to the initial officer making the traffic stop, Calix hit a raised portion of the sidewalk causing him to fall. The officer conducted the stop, checked his welfare and began his investigation.
An additional officer responded to assist. According to TPD, Calix provided several names but the officers were not able to verify his identity. During the course of their contact with him, the officers requested members from the Tucson Fire Department to respond to treat Calix’s injuries.
When the paramedics concluded their treatment, the officers started to detain Calix for providing a false name and false information. Witnesses claimed when the officers attempted to detain Calix, he produced a handgun and a struggle with the officers over the gun ensued.
Calix allegedly discharged the weapon and the officers continued to struggle with him in an attempt to disarm him. Calix reportedly attempted to turn the weapon on the officers. One officer, Ian Brown, a one year veteran of the Tucson Police Department, then discharged his duty weapon, striking Calix.
Detectives were able to determine Calix’s true identity and confirmed he had a probation violation warrant for narcotics related offenses out of Florida.
