The Tucson Police Department is continuing the investigation of the fatal pedestrian collision that occurred late Thursday evening.
On Thursday evening June 16, 2016, at 11:05 p.m., officers responded to the area of East Grant Road and North Mountain View Avenue on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers met with Tucson Fire personnel who were rendering aid to the pedestrian. Shortly after their arrival, Tucson Fire advised that the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. The pedestrian from the fatal collision has been identified as 48-year-old Kevin Ryan Hugg. Next of kin have been notified.
Tucson Police Traffic Detectives responded to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that a 2012 Dodge Challenger was traveling eastbound on East Grant Road in the center lane. The pedestrian was walking northbound across Grant Road, near North Mountain View Avenue. As the pedestrian began crossing the eastbound lanes of traffic, he was struck by the Dodge Challenger. It does not appear that the pedestrian was crossing at the intersection or in a crosswalk.
During the investigation, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle was impaired. The driver was identified as 36-year-old Byron Omar Calderon. He was arrested and booked into the Pima County Jail on one count of Manslaughter. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the collision; however alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
