On Sunday July 3, 2016 at approximately 2:20 am, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office received several calls of shots being fired in the area of Hereford and Pintek Road southeast of Sierra Vista. One caller advised of shots fired, while a second caller advised that he was driving in the area and was cut off by another vehicle.
Upon Deputies arrival, they located a Honda Accord in the intersection of Pintek and Hereford with substantial damage to the front fenders and sides where it appeared to have gone through a fence. The vehicle also has multiple bullet holes along the sides.
U.S. Border Patrol agents were already at the scene and they advised a subject there told them that they had been cut off while driving in the area by a second vehicle. The investigation reveals that approximately 2:00 am, two vehicles were travelling on Pintek Road, one going southbound and the other going northbound. The road has significant ruts as a result of recent rains and the southbound vehicle (a 2004 Toyota Tundra) went into the opposing lane causing the northbound vehicle (a 2004 Honda) to take evasive action and run off the road and through at least one fence. The driver of the Honda, 72 year old Eugene Hinbaugh, began following the Toyota and once on Hereford Road, rammed into the back of the vehicle three times.
The driver of the Toyota advised that he stopped on Hereford Road just east of Pintek and fired several times at the Honda.
The driver of the Honda, Mr. Hinbaugh, was taken into custody and is being charged with Aggravated Assault and Endangerment. The investigation is being continued in regards to the driver of the Toyota.
The weapon used was a semi-automatic AK-47 which is owned legally by the driver of the Toyota.
