Electrical Malfunction Causes Fire Damage Tucson School

A fire destroyed a building being used as a school in the 600 block of South Meyer early Tuesday morning.  Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting smoke and flames from the area as passers- by could see it from the freeway.

The first TFD Engine arrived on scene and reported flames coming from a window in the back of the building, which appeared to be a residential house.  They had to force entry into a security door in the front of the house and reported smoke banked down almost to floor level with very low visibility inside.

They performed a quick search of the building to ensure no one was inside as the ladder crew went to the roof to cut a hole.

The ladder crew cut two holes in the roof and reported heavy fire in the attic space of the home as well.  The interior crew was able to confirm no one was inside and then made it to the rear of the home to extinguish the fire.  The crew on the roof also helped extinguish the fire using a hose line from above.  Nine units consisting of 23 firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the fire 20 minutes after arriving.

There were no injuries reported by firefighters.  Attempts were being made to contact the owners or property representatives to the school.

Fire investigators were able to determine the fire started in the attic due to a malfunction involving the electrical wiring.
