On Thursday, September 1st, the Casa Grande Fire Department and Mayor Bob Jackson will present a Community Service Award to a young man who helped save his family from a recent house fire.
On July 26th, Ashton Brown was half asleep on his living room sofa when he noticed a light flicker through the window blinds. After hearing a very loud noise, he went to wake his parents who were sleeping on the other end of the house. As his parents got up and started to investigate, smoke alarms began to sound and smoke began to quickly fill the house. Within four minutes of Ashton waking his parents, the attic of the home was fully involved and fire had breached the tile roof. Shortly thereafter, the roof collapsed. Ashton’s observations and actions are credited with allowing the family to safely evacuate the home with their pets.
The event will also recognize Firehouse Subs, located at 1664 E. Florence Boulevard, for hosting a water collection event to benefit public safety. The event collected 100 cases of water for the Fire and Police Departments, some of which will be used for the Police Department’s water giveaway program for the homeless.
The Community Service Award presentation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on September 1st at Casa Grande Fire Station 504, located at 1637 East McCartney Road in Casa Grande. The program will consist of remarks from Mayor Bob Jackson and Fire Chief Scott Miller, the presentation of awards, and a tour of the fire station that will include refreshments and cake. The public is welcome to attend.
