Fire Outside Home Spreads To Attic Displaces Family

A family of four was displaced after a fire damaged their home in the 200 block of West Ohio Street.  Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting heavy black smoke from what appeared to be the rear of the home.

Tucson Fire crews arrived to find two houses on a single lot with heavy smoke and flames coming from the house on the back of the lot.  The crews quickly recognized that a power line came down in the rear of the home, preventing the fire fighters from getting to that area of the fire.  The fire was burning a shed as well as possessions in a patio area on the outside of the home but spreading into the attic from the side and rear of the home.

The fire fighters extinguished as much of the fire as they could safety do while they waited for Tucson Electric Power to arrive to secure the electricity.  Additional fire fighters entered the home to perform a quick search and ensure everyone was out.

The ladder crew went to the roof to cut a hole as the fire had spread into the attic space.  Once the crew cut the hole, they were able to place a nozzle in the hole and extinguish the flames.

Nine units consisting of 23 firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the fire 26 minutes after arriving.  There were no injuries reported by firefighters.

The fire displaced four people; a 44 year-old male, 43 year-old female, 17 year-old female, and 14 year-old female.  The family did not need assistance from Red Cross as they stated they could stay elsewhere.

Initial indications were that the fire started on the outside of the home but fire investigators were still working to determine the cause.
