Mobile Home Fire Displaces Resident And Dog

Mobile Home park located south west of the northwest Auto Mall on Wetmore Rowd

A fire destroyed a mobile home in the 4300 block of North Wegner Lane, displacing one resident and a dog. Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from a mobile home near Auto Mall Drive and Wetmore.

Fire crews were given an updated address as they responded as additional information was obtained by emergency dispatchers, including information that the resident was out of the home.

The first crew arrived on scene and reported the home fully involved in flames. The amount of fire prevented the crews from entering the home so they fought the fire defensively, or from the outside.

Multiple hose streams were used to extinguish the home on fire as well as protecting the home to the south by preventing the fire from spreading. Nine units and twenty-three firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the fire was under control thirty minutes after they arrived.

There were no injuries to firefighters. Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the resident, a 62 year-old male. Fire investigators were on scene and working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The resident did tell investigators that he woke up and saw the wall on fire. He initially attempted to smother the fire and then used an extinguisher but the fire was growing too quickly so he evacuated safely. The home was considered a total loss.

Safety Message From Tucson Fire Department: Mobile home fires pose several risks to both owners and firefighters. Their construction allows fire to spread quickly and they are often times spaced closely together. Practice an escape plan and make sure you have working smoke alarms to give yourself the best chance of survival if an emergency ever takes place in your home.
