The University of Arizona is holding a remembrance ceremony on Decemer 4, featuring the dedication of the USS Arizona Mall Memorial in front of the Student Union Memorial Center. This new memorial was designed as a full-scale outline of the famous ship’s deck, and honors those who lost their lives aboard the ship during the attack.
The ceremony will feature a flyover by the 47th Fighter Squadron. Now based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, the squadron is credited with shooting down eight enemy aircraft at Pearl Harbor. The program will also include guest speakers and performances by UA students. It will conclude with unveiling the 1,177 medallions embedded in the walls of the memorial – one for each of the men who lost his life that day.
A reception will follow the program at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Visitors can also view the exhibition “The Life and Legacy of the USS Arizona” at Special Collections from 1:30-2:30 p.m. before the ceremony. Regular exhibit hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. A digital companion exhibit features additional materials from the archives: http://speccoll.library.arizona.edu/online-exhibits/exhibits/show/uss-arizona/chronology
