34 Impaired Drivers, Wrong Way Driver Arrested In West Valley

On December 16, 2016, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), arrested 34 impaired drivers in the West Valley.

In addition, a DPS Motorcycle Trooper stopped and arrested a suspected wrong-way driver. Sheldon Dick, 37, of Indian Wells, Arizona was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Loop 101. The trooper was able to perform a traffic break essentially stopping traffic on the freeway before putting his life in danger as he caught up with and stopped the wrong way driver.

Sheldon Dick was charged with Aggravated DUI and endangerment.

“I am so proud of this Trooper. What he did was truly heroic. The wrong way driver literally drove by him before he was able to get him stopped. This entire effort was extremely successful as 12 separate law enforcement agencies came together to target impaired drivers and make the roadways safer for everyone,” said Captain Tim Mason of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
