AZ DPS Trooper Wounded, Citizen Shoots Attacker In I-10 Incident

An Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Trooper was wounded in a shooting after responding to a report of a rollover collision westbound Interstate 10 near the junction with State Route 85.

A citizen called in and advised the 911 operator that his vehicle had been shot while driving along I-10. As a trooper responded to that call, he found the rolled-over vehicle.

A trooper began investigating the scene of the rolled over vehicle when he was ambushed. He was shot by the attacker and began struggling with him. The attacker had shot the trooper, severely injured shoulder area.

A citizen stopped to render assistance. He asked the trooper what he needed him to do, and the trooper asked for his help. The citizen returned to his vehicle, and got his own weapon. He then shot and killed the attacker.

A woman who had been ejected from the rolled over vehicle is deceased as well as the trooper’s attacker.

The trooper is a 27-year veteran.
