Sanchez Missive Earns Varney “A Dark Day In Tucson” Response
The unusual relationship between the Tucson Unified School District and the Tucson Metro Chamber of Commerce took an odd twist last week, when the Chamber’s president and CEO, Mike Varney, penned an emotional letter in defense of TUSD Superintendent H.T. Sanchez.
In his letter, Varney, who claims to represent the business community, called the forced resignation of Sanchez “regrettable.” Varney claimed that Sanchez did not resign, but was “railroaded by three members of the board.”
Over time, Varney has made several suspect claims about the Chamber and District. A cursory scan of the Metro Chamber’s membership clearly shows that Varney represents primarily the area’s nonprofit and corporate business sectors rather than the for-profit small to medium business that drive Tucson’s economy. It is also small to medium businesses owners that disproportionally send their children to TUSD, and hire the District’s graduates.
