Apache Junction Resident Drowns At Canyon Lake

Sunday afternoon around 3:30 pm the Maricopa County Sheriff deputies responded to the Boulder Recreation Area at Canyon Lake in reference to a possible drowning.

Witness accounts say they observed a male swimming from the southern part of the lake to the northern side. As the male got about half way across the lake, he found he could not make it and began swimming back towards the south side. Approximately 20 yards from the shore line; the male began to yell for help and went under the water. His disappearance was witnessed by several people who called 911 as he went under.

When Deputies arrived at the scene, they spoke to the witnesses and began to look in the area using sonar but attempts were unsuccessful. MCSO Detectives and divers were called to the scene to assume the investigation and recovery of the body.

MCSO Drive Team deployed an (ROV) (remotely operated vehicle) in the area where the swimmer was last seen. At approximately 9:30pm the body of 28 year old Tyron Turner was located in about nine feet of water. The Search and Recovery Dive Team completed the retrieval of victim’s body at approximately 10pm.

An external body exam was conducted and no obvious signs of trauma or injuries were present. Tyron Turner conveyed to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation into this incident. Foul play is not suspected in this incident; however this case remains under investigation at this time.

Tyron Turner was a resident of Apache Junction visiting Canyon Lake on Sunday.
