Oro Valley Residents Could Be Stuck With Unjustified Stop On La Canada

On May 4, 2017, I requested from our Town Engineer, Paul Keesler, a copy of the Signal Warrant Analysis (SWA) justifying the signal that is in the Town Manager’s Recommended Budget that is to be located at the entrance of the Community Center on La Canada. A SWA is a common practice followed by many communities throughout the country to justify the need, therefore the money, for a traffic signal.

Mr. Keesler, and Ms. Hynd, both have advised me they they would comply with my request. As of the writing of this email, almost 3 weeks later, I have not heard a word. This leads me to believe that: 1) there was no SWA to justify this signal, or 2) they are busy covering their tracks to produce one.

I understand that the RTA is going to provide the funding for this signal, so what is the “big deal” if is at not cost to the Town. The “big deal” is that there are other areas of the Town that probably need a signal long before the placing one in front of the Community Center. Places like the corner of La Canada/Moore Rd., Moore Rd/Rancho Vistoso Blvd, etc.

This signal, although not costing the Town any money, is nothing more than the Town staff bending to please the Mayor, or to put it another way, staff not having the wherewithal to tell the Mayor “NO”, there are more important places to put this signal.. There are about 1000-1200 members of the Community Center/Golf Facility. There are over 25,000 drivers in Oro Valley. The Citizens of Oro Valley have been made to support this irresponsible purchase from HSL with an increased sales tax, and now the People will be further put out of their way with an unjustified stop on La Canada.
