Tucson Police Investigate Fatal Golf Links Vehicle Collision

On Thursday August 11, 2016, at approximately 2:40 p.m, Tucson Police officers responded to a report of a serious injury collision on E Golf Links Road between East Aviation Parkway and East Ajo Way. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles involved in the collision. The first vehicle was a tan, 2002 Buick Century.

The driver and sole occupant of that vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second vehicle was a silver, 2009 Toyota Camry. Two occupants were in that vehicle and both were pronounced deceased on scene by responding officers.

Traffic Detectives from the Tucson Police Department responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They were able to determine that the Buick was traveling eastbound on East Golf Links Road at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Buick side swiped the guard rail along the eastern portion of Golf Links Road and then lost control of the vehicle. The Buick then jumped the raised median into oncoming, westbound traffic, where it struck the Toyota almost head-on.
During the initial investigation, the driver of the Buick displayed signs and symptoms of impairment and a DUI investigation was conducted. Both speed and impairment appear to be factors in the collision.

The two people killed in the collision have been identified as 76-year-old Joel W. Cohen and 77-year-old Mary Jane Cohen. Next of kin have been notified.

The driver of the Buick was identified as 21-year-old Alexander Bondy. After being released from the hospital, Bondy was booked into the Pima County Jail on two counts of 2nd Degree Murder.
