Opponents Of Proposition 205 Now Counting On Voters

After the Supreme Court announced its decision to keep Proposition 205 on Arizona ballots this November, opponents are turning to voters to reject the measure.

“Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy respects the Court’s decision, but is disappointed by the ruling,” said Yavapai County Attorney and Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy Chair Sheila Polk. “Our goal now is to make sure that every Arizonan enters the voting booth in November with a full understanding of both the intended and the unintended impacts of the 20 pages of new laws in Prop 205. We hope all citizens will read the lengthy legalese before voting and will learn how devastating Proposition 205 would be to our state if passed.”

On August 30, Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy filed a motion to intervene in the latest lawsuit over recreational marijuana. The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, the group that seeks to legalize recreational marijuana in Arizona, filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Michele Reagan and Attorney General Mark Brnovich asking the Maricopa County Superior Court to order the removal of state officials’ description of Proposition 205 from the voter publicity pamphlet. Their claim is that the summary assigned to Proposition 205 is inaccurate and misleading.

“As we’ve said over the past several months, Prop 205 is intentionally misleading and confusing,” said Yavapai County Attorney and Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy Chair Sheila Polk. “Clearly, we are not alone in our confusion. The sweeping provisions of this 20 page proposition, full of legalese and significant changes to existing Arizona law, are very difficult to concisely summarize for voters. Propositions, if passed, are voter-protected. Our goal is always to ensure voters are given a fair description of the proposition and its implications for Arizona.”
