Cochise County Sheriff Investigates Sierra Vista Stabbing

On Sunday October 9, 2016, at approximately 3:00 am, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stabbing that had just taken place in the 5000 block of Ricardo Drive in Sierra Vista. The female caller said that a man had just stabbed her boyfriend and fled the area.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 30 year old man who was lying inside of the trailer with a significant wound to his abdomen. Medical personnel arrived on scene and the victim was subsequently airlifted to a Tucson hospital for treatment.

Deputies interviewed the girlfriend who reported that she and the victim were inside of the trailer when she heard a man she recognized as Derek Childs knocking on the door and asking to speak to her boyfriend. The woman advised that her boyfriend went outside and she heard the sounds of a struggle before the victim came back inside the home saying that he had been stabbed. The woman stated that the suspect Derek Childs came into the home before fleeing the area.

The victim was able to tell deputies that he went outside to speak to Derek Childs about a propane tank when a struggle ensued and he was stabbed with a knife he described as a hunting knife between 6-8 inches in length.

The Sheriff’s Office went to the residence of Derek Childs and he was not home. As a search of the area was completed, several items of evidence were recovered.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in locating 30 year old Derek Ryan Childs in connection with this incident. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Mr. Childs, call the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office at 432-9500.
