Mark Holdbrooks, age 67 of Closter, New Jersey, and David Victor, known as “King Victor” of Brooklyn, New York have been arrested for the murder of former Arizona Wildcat, Michael Wright, according to Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal.
The arrest is the result of a year-long joint investigation.
On Sunday, November 8, 2015, at 9:21 p.m., the Closter Police Department received a telephone call reporting a missing person. Police officers responded to 67 Macarthur Avenue, Closter, New Jersey, to interview Holdbrooks, the person who made the report. Holdbrooks reported that he had not seen nor heard from his close family friend and roommate, Wright, since 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2015. On November 10, 2015, Wright’s body was located within a white-colored Lexus registered to Wright in the area of 98 East 16th Street in Brooklyn, New York. Wright’s body was concealed by a large garbage bag in the rear of the vehicle, and it was determined that Wright had suffered head trauma. The Closter Police Department was notified by the NYPD of the discovery of Wright’s body, at which time the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Squad was also notified and joined the investigation.
During the year-long investigation, detectives determined that Wright was drugged and murdered in his Closter home by Holdbrooks, his longtime roommate, and Holdbrook’s accomplice, Victor. Detectives determined that, following the murder, Holdbrooks and Victor loaded the body of Michael Wright into Wright’s white Lexus. Victor then drove the vehicle with Wright’s body to 16th Street in Brooklyn where he abandoned the vehicle, while Holdbrooks remained at the Closter home.
As a result of the investigation, Holdbrooks and Victor were arrested on November 1, 2016 in New York City by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Closter Police Department, and the NYPD 70th Precinct. Each were charged with the following offenses: one count of Murder, Possession of a Weapon, Desecration of Human Remains, Hindering Apprehension, and Possession of Gama Hydroxybutyrate.
A Bergen County Superior Court judge set bail at $3,000,000.00. Holdbrooks and Victor are awaiting extradition from New York to New Jersey.
