On Thursday, Virginia Kelley of Apache Junction was surrounded by supporters as she fought to save her home from predatory squatters. An Apache Junction judge tossed out an injunction against the 30 year Apache Junction resident which had prevented her from occupying her own home.

About three months ago, Kelley opened up her home to a struggling family of four. Kelley believed that she was helping good people, who were looking for a fresh start. Instead, she had opened her home to savvy squatters with violent tendencies.

When Kelley asked them to leave, they filed an order of protection against her. Not long after, a constable showed up at her door and told her she would have to vacate her home and not come back. It appears the couple had claimed that it was Kelley, who threatened them.

When Rep. Kelly Townsend heard of Kelley’s plight she knew she had to help. Townsend brought attention to the situation and offered morale support to Kelley in the courtroom on Thursday.

The predatory squatters did not show up in court.

With meager means, Kelley is facing home repair and legal bills. Her daughters, who would like to have her come live with them in Florida, have set up a GoFundMe page. The page reads in part:

She is now back in her home, with much work to do! The Apache Junction community, Mayor and State Representatives have been in so wonderful in supporting Virginia with this difficult legal process. We are grateful that the Community is interested in assisting our Mother with the rehabilitation of the home and property. Funds will be needed for many things including the materials and clean up. Also, we may need to secure the property from any further violence or vandalism. We also hope to be able to bring her back to her family in Florida in the near future!
