Pima County woman shot defending her home

Deputies with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 9-1-1 call from a woman in the 9000 block of South Desert Well Road, on December 26. The female 9-1-1 caller reportedly had been shot at that location.

Upon arrival, they found the 61-year-old Pima County resident had suffered a gunshot wound to her chest. She was airlifted to University of Arizona Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.

Detectives with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department San Xavier District learned that neighbors had also heard the shots and came over to the victim’s residence only to find her injured. There was evidence of an exchange of gunfire during the home invasion and it was obvious that multiple shots had been fired. During their initial investigation, detectives were not able to receive a full statement from the victim due to her condition.

Investigators did learn, however, that a small gold-colored car was seen leaving the area. It is unclear at this time if the vehicle is related to the shooting. Anyone with information on this case is urged to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME. The investigation continues.

More and more rural Arizona residents have armed themselves due to the high rate of drug traffickers along the U.S./Mexico border. According to inside sources with the Tohono O’odham Tribe, the residents in the San Xavier District have grown more fearful as the traffickers have appeared to be emboldened by the Obama administrations’ lax border enforcement measures.
