On March 31, 2017, shortly before 3:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers responded to a report of a serious injury collision involving a pedestrian on W. Congress St. and N. Church Ave. Upon arrival, the Tucson Fire Department was on scene treating an adult male in the roadway approximately fifty feet west of Church Ave. on Congress St. in front of a Sun Link stop. The male had obvious signs of trauma.
Paramedics transported the male to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. On April 2, 2017 the male succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. He has been identified as 64-year-old Robert Plata. Next of kin have been notified.
Detectives interviewed witnesses and collected evidence. It does not appear Mr. Plata had been in a crosswalk when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that did not remain on scene.
As the detectives are continuing the investigation, they are urging anyone with information related to this incident to please call 88-CRIME (520-882-7463). You can remain anonymous.
