Ironwood Ridge student wins CD 1 art competition

This spring, high schools across Arizona’s District One entered students’ artwork for the national 2013 Congressional Art Competition. On Friday, the students were honored with a reception at the Oro Valley Public Library to honor the District One winners.

The winner was, “Hello” by Stephanie Spalding of Ironwood Ridge High School, Oro Valley.

Stephanie’s pen-and-ink creation was drawn using the single word “Hello” over and over. It depicts her young sister saying “Hello” to their grandmother on the phone. The winner was chosen by a panel of judges from throughout Arizona. Stephanie’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside artwork from other winners nationwide.

Artwork from runners-up will be displayed in Kirkpatrick’s Washington D.C. office and Arizona district offices. They are:

First Runner Up: Sarah Rex of Ironwood Ridge High School
Second Runner Up: Laurel Dieckhaus of the Sonoran Science Academy
Third Runners Up: Mary Katherine Dobrydney of Mountain View High School and Charles Bryce Corning of Canyon Del Oro High School

“The art competition is a great way to showcase the range of talent in our district,” Representative Anne Kirkpatrick said. “I am proud to display the work of these students in the U.S. Capitol and in our offices across Arizona.”

Every year since 1982, members of the U.S. House of Representatives have sponsored this effort to recognize and encourage artistic talent in congressional districts across the nation. All high schools in District One were eligible to participate.
