According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, during 2008-2012 there were a total of 183 cases of firework related injuries reported in the hospital emergency room data. ADHS collects hospital discharge records for inpatient and emergency department visits from all Arizona licensed hospitals.
Approximately 85 percent of these cases were to men. More than half of the injuries were reported among individuals less than 25 years of age. The median hospital emergency charge was $1,457 dollars per patient.
It is evident, according to ADHS, that there has been an increasing trend in the firework injury rates. However, the injury rate is less than one per 100,000 persons.
July and January months are peak months for firework related injuries.
The records are collected twice each year in accordance with on Arizona Revised Statute (A.R.S.) § 36-125-05, and Arizona Administrative Code Title 9, Chapter 11, Articles 4 and 5. Approximately 3 million discharge records are collected annually.
