On the evening of September 2, Tucson Police Department officers responded to a hospital regarding a 1-year-old boy in critical condition with bruising on his head and body. The baby was brought in by the child’s mother, Diana Noncheva, and her boyfriend, Bryan Barker.
Detectives determined that the injuries to the baby occurred earlier in the day while he was in the care of 29-year-old Barker at their residence in the 4800 block of East 29th Street. Barker contacted the mother, age 23, by phone and claimed that he had dropped the baby, and the baby was now unresponsive. Noncheva arrived home after work, and the baby was still unresponsive.
Approximately one hour later, the two called a friend to pick them up and take them to the hospital to seek treatment for the baby.
Barker was arrested for 2 counts of Child Abuse for causing the injuries and then failing to immediately seek medical treatment for the baby. Noncheva was arrested for 1 count of Child Abuse for not immediately seeking medical assistance for the baby after becoming aware of the injuries. Both were booked into the Pima County Jail. The baby remains in critical condition.
