On the early evening of October 5, Tucson Police Department officers arrived at the area of East Golf Links Road and South Calle Yucatan in response to a collision involving a bicycle and a SUV. Officers discovered that the bicyclist, 71-year-old Thomas Ferrer, had been seriously injured as a result of the collision.
Mr. Ferrer passed away at the hospital. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was not injured.
Detectives learned that a 2000 Ford sports utility vehicle was travelling westbound on East Golf Links in the median traffic lane. The bicyclist was riding southbound across East Golf Links Road at the intersection of South Calle Yucatan. Mr. Ferrer rode his bicycle into the path of the sports utility vehicle, which struck him. Mr. Ferrer was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. There were no indications that the driver of the sports utility vehicle was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
