Pima supervisors to choose from Clinco, Dalessandro, Nunez to fill LD 2 Senate vacancy

dems-for-ld2The Pima County Board of Supervisors now has three names to choose from to replace retired State Senator Linda Lopez. Precinct committee persons, who live in the Pima County portion of Legislative District 2, nominated Demion Clinco, Rep. Andrea Dalessandro and Annabelle Nuñez to serve out the remainder of Lopez’s term.

In a single round of voting, three nominees received the required 50% +1 of the vote to be selected. 42 of a possible 44 PCs cast a ballot with the final result:

Demion Clinco- 28 votes
Clinco is the president of the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation.

Andrea Dalessandro- 26 votes
Dalessandro is currently an LD 2 House Rep. She was elected 2012. It is expected that she will run for the senate seat in the November, 2014 election.

Annabelle Nuñez- 23 votes
Nunez is an associate librarian with Arizona Health Sciences Library at University of Arizona.

Miguel Cuevas – 20 votes
Cuevas, a former Tucson Unified School District Governing Board member was considered too moderate for many progressive democrats. He lost his TUSD seat in 2012.

Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Bill Roe has submitted the names to The Pima County Board of Supervisors. The Board will meet Tuesday, January 21 to appoint one of the three nominees to fill the LD 2 Senate vacancy.

LD 2 State Senator Linda Lopez resigned from her seat effective January 13, 2014. Lopez resigned due to a full time job with the Easter Seals. Lopez was first elected as a representative in November, 2000.

The Democratic precinct committee persons in LD 2 met today in Green Valley and nominated the following three individuals, one of whom will be selected by the Pima County Board of Supervisors at their January 21, 2014 meeting as the successor until the end of the year:

The new senator will likely face Daniel Estrella (R) in the 2014 General Election.
