Free last minute tax help still available in Tucson, Sierra Vista & Douglas

Tax PreparationAs the tax season comes to a close, Catholic Community Services is offering extended hours at local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that prepare and electronically file the 2013 federal and State of Arizona income tax returns at no cost.

VITA sites are available for seniors, people with low to moderate incomes earning less than $55,000, disabled individuals and/or people who speak English as a second language.  These sites are not able to provide help with business tax returns or complex individual income tax returns.

VITA community tax volunteers are trained and tested by the Internal Revenue Service. They can determine what deductions, credits and allowable expenses you qualify for.  Some tax items, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit can cause or increase a tax refund.  VITA volunteers can determine if you qualify for this important credit.  Don’t guess – find out if you do qualify.

Liz Thomey, Assets for Families Director, Pio Decimo Center, in Tucson said, “Almost every major life event relates back to the tax return.  Birth, death, marriage, divorce, a new job or loss of employment … any of these items may end up on your tax return.  Unfortunately life events often get in the way of timely filing.  Catholic Community Services want to make it as easy as possible for you to make the tax filing deadline by having extended hours.”.

For those seeking free tax preparation, be sure to bring the following: photo identification for yourself and spouse; Social Security Number cards (SSN’s) or Individual Tax Identification Number cards/letters (ITIN’s) for each person listed on the tax return; all wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2); interest, dividend or miscellaneous income and/or mortgage interest paid statements (Forms 1099 or 1098); and any other information concerning income and expenses for 2013.  If filing jointly, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
