On April 15, 2014, at 9:21 p.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to a report a vehicle collision at the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Swan Road involving a 1998 Plymouth Breeze and a 1997 Toyota Camry. The Plymouth Breeze came to rest on the front patio of Sir Veza’s Taco Garage on the northwest corner of the intersection. The driver of the Toyota Camry, 36-year old Giovanni Sambrano, was transported to a local area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The driver of the Plymouth Breeze, 22-year old Miguel A. Carrizoza, had attempted to flee on foot but was detained by bystanders. The driver and his 23-year old male passenger were transported to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives determined that the Toyota Camry was southbound on Swan Road in the curb lane passing through the intersection on a green light. The Plymouth Breeze was westbound on Speedway Boulevard in the median lane. The Plymouth Breeze ran the red light and struck the driver’s side of the Toyota Camry. The collision caused the Plymouth Breeze to veer off the roadway and into the front patio of Sir Veza’s Taco Garage. The driver of the Plymouth Breeze exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. Bystanders in the area chased the driver and held him down until police arrived. He was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Carrizoza was booked into the Pima County Jail for 1 count of 2nd Degree Murder, 1 count of Aggravated Assault, 1 count of Felony Criminal Damage and 1 count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
