On Tuesday, Governor Jan Brewer shed her last conservative vestiges before leaving office when she vetoed legislation that would have allowed gun owners with concealed carry permits to to ignore a “no guns” signs. Brewer also vetoed legislation that would have prevented municipalities from enacting their own gun laws.
According to gun rights supporters, HB2517 was considered essential legislation. It would have held government officials responsible “if there is a knowing and willful enactment of a local gun law that exceeds the restrictions permitted by the state.”
In her veto letter, the often vague and punitive Brewer wrote, “A person or an organization who perceives an ordinance is illegal already may seek remedies through the legal system,” and said she “troubled by the vague and punitive provision that a person in violation of the statute is ‘subject to termination from employment.”
Brewer also vetoed a bill that would have allowed ranchers to kill wolves on federal lands. SB1211 would have allowed ranchers to kill a wolf that was killing or injuring their livestock.
Brewer is not seeking re-election and her erratic decisions on legislation and insistence on expanding Medicaid has put her few supporters in the Legislature at risk in the upcoming elections.
