Knife wielding jail visitor attempting “suicide by cop”

A 33 year old homeless man wielding two knives in his hands and refusing to relinquish the weapons was subdued by Maricopa County Sheriff’s detention officers. He was then jailed on disorderly conduct charges.

Jesse Bustos Arce DOB 11/30/70 exited the men’s bathroom in the lobby of the Fourth Avenue Jail on Monday morning brandishing two knives and making threatening statements. When he refused orders to drop the weapons, a Sheriff”s detention officer deployed his Taser, a less than lethal weapon authorized for use in the jails, which forced Arce to give up his weapons.

Other officers then quickly subdued Arce without injury or further incident.

Sheriff Arpaio says Arce claimed to be attempting “suicide by cop.” Arce is currently housed in the Sheriff’s jail psych unit.
