Salmon, Gosar demand DHS withdraw contract USIS; company investigating migrants

In a letter sent this week to Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, Arizona congressmen Matt Salmon and Paul Gosar wrote of their concerns about the recent revelations that the private sector company US Investigations Services Inc. (USIS) has been awarded a contract by DHS, “to carry out one of our most important border security activities;” conducting interviews of recent immigrants arriving during the border surge.

USIS, “was recently forced to admit that it was responsible for performing the background checks for former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and Alexis Aaron,” read the letter.

Alexis shot and killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard last fall.

According to the representatives, the Justice Department has alleged that this same firm was charged with handling a large portion of background checks for the government and “dumped over 665,000 cases without having properly reviewed them.”

“Clearly USIS’ performance and suitability to complete the essential national security checks must be thoroughly scrutinized. Considering their past record and these worrisome allegations, we believe the stakes are too high to allow USIS to be put in charge of one of our most important border security programs,” the representatives wrote. “The risk to our national security is just too great.”

As the AZDI reported earlier this year, Border patrol agents reported that they were instructed to accept illegal immigrants without question, who claimed to be minors when they turned themselves over to agents at the U.S. Mexico. Some of those who turned themselves over, according to agents, were clearly older individuals and would not have qualified as Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC).

“In our view, the award of $190 million contract to USIS, a company which has been cited by our nation’s Department of Justice for recklessness, negligence, and potentially criminal behavior is unconscionable and indefensible.” The representatives ask, “How can the American taxpayer be expected to trust such a company to properly vet immigrants seeking citizenship and ensure that terrorist and criminals are not being lawfully admitted into our country and communities?”
