In 2013, Phoenix Police investigated a residential burglary in which over $25,000 worth of jewelry and sports memorabilia were stolen after suspect(s) broke a front window to gain entry. The suspect used a rock to break the window. The investigating officer swabbed the rock used by the suspect(s) to obtain a DNA sample.
The DNA sample was processed and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Not only was the sample matched to 44 year old Shadd Wayne Sowell, the sample was also matched to three other residential burglaries and one commercial burglary.
The profile of the burglaries linked to Sowell indicates his target is high end jewelry and electronics, and his preferred method of operation is the break the glass of a door or window to gain entry. Two of the five burglary reports indicate the suspect left his blood at the scene. During two other burglaries, the suspect removed a drink from the victim’s refrigerator and drank from the container and left it behind. The container was collected and processed for DNA.
All of these samples were matched back to a DNA sample stored with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. DPS has also filed charges and have an active warrant for Sowell’s arrest.
The Phoenix Police department is looking to the public to help in ending Sowell’s victimization and are asking anyone who may have information concerning the whereabouts of Shadd Sowell to please call Silent Witness at (480) W-I-T-N-E-S-S. As always, any caller may remain anonymous.
