In August 2014, employees from the Apple Store at 15169 N. Scottsdale Road, in Scottsdale, reported a series of shoplifting events involving the same suspect over the course of the previous few months.  The suspect, Rex Chapman, was originally identified by multiple employees based on his previous celebrity status as an NBA basketball player.

Chapman is alleged to have picked up items in the store and made it appear that he was paying for the items through the store’s self-checkout (via iPhone app). He would then leave the store without actually paying for the items. He allegedly took the items to a local pawn shop and sold the items for cash.

There are seven incidents of theft reported to Scottsdale PD for which detectives believe Chapman is responsible. Total estimated loss is over $14,000.

Scottsdale Police Property Crimes Detectives furthered the investigation to a point where they developed probable cause to arrest Chapman for Organized Retail Theft and related crimes.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. today, detectives from the Scottsdale Police Department arrested Mr. Chapman after stopping his car in northeast Scottsdale.

Chapman is facing nine counts of Organized Retail Theft and five counts of Trafficking in Stolen Property, all felonies.

According to CBSSports.com, “Chapman, drafted in 1988, spent 12 years in the NBA as a player and several years after in both media and front-office roles, including a stint as vice president of player development for the Denver Nuggets. Chapman reportedly made $22 million during his NBA career.”
