Holder resignation draws strong reactions

holder-ericThe National Border Patrol Council posted “Good riddance!” on their Facebook page upon hearing the news that Attorney General Eric Holder was resigning. Arizona representatives were slightly more diplomatic as they weighed-in on the resignation.

Rep. Matt Salmon: “Eric Holder holds the distinction of being the only Attorney General or cabinet member in the history of our nation to be held in Contempt of Congress. He has actively impeded Congressional oversight of the Justice Department; he has obfuscated, where he has not outright concealed, potentially criminal activities in Department of Justice initiatives, such as operation Fast and Furious; he has violated the First and Fourth Amendments by spying on members of the media, and doing so without a warrant; he has failed to uncover the IRS’ politically motivated intimidation and harassment; and he has steadfastly refused to act on the orders of the House to prosecute individuals in Contempt of Congress.”

“General Holder’s resignation should be welcomed by advocates of justice across our nation, and the Senate should seek to confirm a replacement who will exemplify a commitment to upholding justice. I urge them to take action without delay and confirm a sound candidate as soon as possible.”

U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar: “It’s a sad day when America rejoices about the news that the Attorney General of the United States is set to resign. His place in history will be marked by shameful violations of the rule of law and despicable circumvention of the Constitution. The integrity of our government, our Republic, fundamentally relies on the principle that no person, not even the president or the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, is above our laws.”

“Over the past 6 years this Department of Justice has been defined by its failures and complete disregard for accountability. From the death of Brian Terry in the Fast and Furious gun running operation, to spying on journalist James Rosen, to tapping the phone records of the Associated Press, and most recently the unconstitutional Bergdahl prisoner exchange as well as the IRS scandal, there is no question that Eric Holder leaves behind a legacy of lawlessness, incompetence and hyper partisanship.

“I have been relentless in my pursuit to hold Eric Holder accountable for his actions and will not rest until the door officially hits him on his way out. The American people and U.S. Senate must ensure his replacement is a strict constitutionalists and not a partisan hack. Moving forward, our challenge begins now with rebuilding the trust of the American people and a return to fully upholding the laws of our country.”
