Arizona Congressional delegation seeks disaster declaration

phoenix-floodThe entire Arizona Congressional delegation sent a letter on Wednesday to U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet urging her to expeditiously consider Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s request for a Physical Disaster Declaration for Maricopa County and nearby areas impacted by significant flooding on September 8, 2014.

This region set a new record for daily rainfall and flooding on that day. The flooding caused significant damage to homes, schools, and businesses.

Governor Brewer, has made a formal request under provisions 13 C.F.R. §123.3 (a)(3) and (5) that the federal government declare a Physical Disaster Declaration for Maricopa County and the contiguous counties impacted by the significant flooding on September 8, 2014.

The delegation wrote, “Unfortunately, this monumental rain caused significant flooding across the region, damaging homes, schools, and businesses. It is our understanding that a preliminary damage assessment was performed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the results of this assessment confirm that Maricopa County exceeds the minimum threshold for assistance under the SBA Physical Disaster Loan program.”

We thank you for your attention to this matter, and your swift consideration of Governor Brewer’s Physical Disaster Declaration request.
