Tucson man dies, shooter arrested on scene

van-der-slootOn October 03, 2014, at 11:04 p.m., police were dispatched to the 5200 block of South Missiondale Road in reference to a report of a shooting. As police arrived in the area, they received information that a dark colored GMC pickup truck was involved and had left the scene. Several officers searched for the truck as others responded to the incident location.

Officers were able to located and stop a matching GMC truck at 12th and Nebraska. During the stop, they encountered the victim as he exited the bed of the truck. The victim had obvious signs of gunshot trauma. Officer immediately began rendering first aid. The Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and took the victim to a local area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s next of kin was notified and he was identified as 41 year old Charlie Bencomo.

At the scene officer were able to detain the suspected shooter, who remained there after the shooting occurred. Witnesses indicated to officers that there was a verbal altercation between the victim and suspect before the shooting. After further investigation, detectives arrested the suspect who was identified as 46 year old Douglas Van Der Sloot and charged him with Second Degree Murder. Van Der Sloot was booked into the Pima County Jail.
