On Friday, Oct. 24th, 2014 at 11:20 pm, a Pinal County Sheriff’s Posse Member alerted deputies to a dump truck driving recklessly in the area of Ironwood Dr. and Guadalupe Rd, in Apache Junction.

PCSO Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle after seeing the driver of the dump truck driving recklessly southbound on Ironwood Dr.

Scott Hebel, age 52 of Mesa, was later identified as the driver of the dump truck deputies tried to stop. Hebel refused to yield and led deputies on a ten mile long pursuit through San Tan Valley.

At one point, Hebel accelerated the dump truck and attempted to strike a deputies patrol vehicle.

Hebel turned off of Gantzel Rd. and came to a stop at the intersection of W. Lamar St. and N. Prince Ave. in a San Tan Valley neighborhood. Deputies then performed a high-risk stop.

Hebel ignored the orders of the deputies to exit the vehicle. Deputies had to approach the vehicle and forcibly remove him from the truck. Hebel then resisted arrest and a Taser had to be used to take him into custody.

Deputies secured the dump truck and contacted the owner of the vehicle. The owner of the truck confirmed Hebel was not one of his employees, that there was a break-in at their truck yard earlier that night, and the truck, in question, was stolen during that break-in.

Hebel was booked into the Pinal County Sheriff’s Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Use of Means of Transportation, Unlawful Flight, Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Driving on a Suspended License. He is currently being held on a $25,000 bond.

Sheriff Babeu stated, “This criminal intentionally sped up during an active pursuit attempting to strike one of my deputies. Each and every day uniformed men and women understand the risks we take with the work we do in law enforcement, but at no point is it acceptable behavior for an individual to drive with such disregard for the lives of my deputies and the public.”
