On December 23, 2014, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Crimes Against Children Unit responded to the 7400 block of North Desert Post Road to serve a search warrant reference Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. When the detectives arrived they learned the 46-year-old suspect, identified as Roy Renteria was locked in his room refusing to come out.
Renteria’s mother, who was removed from the residence, told deputies that her son had knives and swords in his room. According to authorities, detectives tried talking to Mr. Renteria in an attempt to have him leave the room but he refused. He stated he had a gun and was not coming out.
Because of his refusal to comply the demands, a Pima Regional SWAT Team response was requested.
When Pima Regional SWAT arrived, negotiators immediately took over communication with Mr. Renteria. He continued to refuse to exit the room.
A robot, equipped with a camera, was deployed to monitor Mr. Renteria’s movements.
As time progressed Mr. Renteria became increasingly lethargic. Deputies determined they needed to enter the room due to his deteriorating condition. SWAT Team members had to remove a large amount of debris Mr. Renteria used as a barricade before he could be reached.
Although Renteria was quickly removed from the room and taken to paramedics who were waiting nearby, they were unable to revive him. Mr. Renteria was pronounced deceased at approximately 2:10 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death of Mr. Renteria. The cause of death is pending a forensic medical examination.
