On December 13, 2014, Scottsdale Teen Connor Brachtl led a team of over 50 Boy Scouts on an Eagle Scout project at the Scottsdale Police Department Mounted Unit Stables. The community service project was required for Connor to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
Connor approached Mounted Unit Sergeant Ponder in early 2014 with an idea to assist the Unit. The project consisted of restoring the condition of the horse training round pen, and the 10 exterior horse stables to their original condition after years of use and wear. The Scouts also provided and assembled 16 picture frames with name tags that will display photos of the police horses from the SPD Mounted Unit’s beginning in 1985 to the present.
Additionally, the team painted the Department’s K9 Unit kennel which is housed at the same location.
According to the department, Connor exhibited outstanding leadership and good project management skills as he developed a detailed operation plan and managed the project through to completion. The work the Scouts performed was a great benefit to the Mounted Unit, and a demonstration of the Boy Scout commitment to service of others and the community.
After the work was completed, the Scouts enjoyed a pizza party and a Police Horse demonstration in the newly reconditioned round pen.
