On Wednesday June 3, 2015 Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a phone scam in the Benson area.
The reporting party said that they had received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico, who advised her that she owed $1,200.00 for an outstanding fine and if she didn’t pay it, she would be arrested immediately. The person calling told the woman to stay on the phone while she went to the nearest moneygram location and send the money.
The woman said the phone number on her caller ID was a Cochise County Sheriff’s Office phone number which led her to believe the phone call was legitimate. The woman then went to a local store in Benson and obtained a moneygram in the amount of $500.00 which she sent to Houston Texas as requested.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know that they do not call anyone to request money over the phone. Report any suspicious calls to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office at 520-432-9500.
