In the past 2 weeks, Yavapai County Sheriff’f Office has received several calls regarding incidents of mail theft occurring primarily in remote areas of Senator Highway between Goldwater Lake and Groom Creek, south of the City of Prescott, and in the 2000 block of Thumb Butte Road, near National Forest Land west of the City of Prescott. Areas of Prescott Valley have also been targeted. In some cases suspects attempted to drill open otherwise locked mail boxes clustered on the roadside – see photo.
The US Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of persons responsible. Yavapai Silent Witness at 1800-932-3232 is also taking calls on this crime series. Text from the Postal Service flyer follows:
UP TO $10,000 FOR INFORMATION ON THE THEFT OF U.S. MAIL IN YAVAPAI COUNTY
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for theft of U.S. Mail in Yavapai County.
Postal Inspectors are seeking information on a series of thefts involving U.S. Mail from postal customer mailboxes within Prescott Valley and Prescott neighborhoods including Country Club Drive, Kilkenny Place, Sandhurst Drive, Cedarwood Drive and Thumb Butte Road. These incidents occurred between September 12 and September 23, 2015.
Theft of U.S. Mail is a federal offense, under United States Code 18 Section 1708. Persons convicted on charges of mail theft may face up to five years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000.
