Girls Claim To Be Buena High School Students In Scam

The Sierra Vista Police Department has recently received two reports of two teenage girls claiming to be Buena High School students and attempting to scam residents out of money by claiming it’s for a fundraiser.

The girls, who are not believed to be students at Buena, said they were participating in a fundraiser for the school’s choir and one person reported that they wanted a check made out to an individual, instead of the school. School officials say that the Buena choir was conducting a fundraiser but that it ended on Oct. 22, prior to the date reports were made regarding the two teenage girls.

“The standard policy is to make checks out to the school where the fundraiser is being conducted, in this case Buena High School,” Sierra Vista Unified School District Public Information Officer Eva Dickerson says.

Anyone who may have been contacted by these girls and was asked to make a check out to an individual, instead of to a school or school-related organization, like the Education Foundation of Sierra Vista, is asked to please contact the Sierra Vista Police Department at 452-7500.

“We have an active investigation open and are seeking information that can help identify these criminals,” said Cpl. Scott Borgstadt, public information officer for the SVPD. If you have a concern regarding the validity of a fundraiser, he recommends contacting the school where the fundraiser is being conducted to verify it.
