On November 24, 2015, at approximately 12:05 a.m., a Pima County deputy noticed a male slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle parked in a car wash bay at 2600 West Valencia Road. The deputy knocked on the driver’s window to check his welfare and noticed that the man was in medical distress. The deputy immediately called for medical assistance.
The Drexel Heights Fire Department responded to the incident location to evaluate and treat the male, identified as 34-year-old Jose Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez was then able to communicate with paramedics. As he was being treated, Mr. Hernandez suddenly became aggressive with the paramedics and then ran towards Valencia Road. The deputies on scene pursued Mr. Hernandez on foot and detained him before he could reach the road.
As paramedics again began to evaluate Mr. Hernandez, he then collapsed and life-saving measures were started. Mr. Hernandez was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
