The Douglas Police Department is advising residents to be wary of a reported credit card scheme involving gift basket deliveries containing alcohol. Information suggests the scam involves a company called “Express Deliveries,” and similar name variations, is contacting individuals by phone to schedule a delivery/package drop-off at your home.
The gift reportedly contains typical gift basket items including alcohol; like a bottle of wine. The scammers arrive at your door dressed in typical “delivery” personnel attire (ie think plain colored pants and matching button up shirt like UPS) and prior to releasing the package to the victims the individual making the delivery will site a fictitious policy requiring that you pay a $3.50 tax/processing fee for accepting items containing alcohol. The delivery driver reassures individuals that the fee is necessary to ensure that alcohol is delivered to individuals 21 and older and for state tax purposes.
The driver will then instruct victims to swipe a credit/debit card vs using cash in order to “track the receipt of delivery”. Individuals are then given a card reader and asked to enter their PIN and submit their charges.
The “reader” is then used to make duplicate credit cards using your information/PIN and the charges against your credit card/debit card ensue.
