According to TPD, on January 17, 2016, just before 4:45 p.m., Tucson Police officers responded to an apartment in the 200 block of W. Roger Rd. in reference to a male caller reporting an assault. Officers arrived on scene and were unable to verify the initial report. However, the officers did become concerned about the welfare of the male caller. The officers attempted many times to speak to the male inside the residence, but he refused. They were eventually able to identify the male caller as Szymanski.

Policereport that around 6:00 p.m. Szymanski called 911 again and said he was going to start shooting. Officers responded back to the residence to make contact with him. As officers were investigating this threat, they learned a separate threat report was filed with the Oro Valley Police Department where Szymanski allegedly threatened to shoot someone. Officers learned Szymanski had access to weapons.

The officers continued their attempts to speak with Mr. Szymanski while other officers evacuated nearby residences. Just before 9:00 p.m., Mr. Szymanski began firing shots inside his residence. Around 3:00 a.m. Szymanski emerged from the residence with a weapon and fired several shots. Officer Brandon Jimenez, a 15-year veteran with the Tucson Police Department and a member of the SWAT Team returned fire, striking Szymanski. The officers immediately rendered first-aid and summoned the paramedics who were on scene. The male was pronounced deceased on scene at 3:20 a.m.
