Tucson Looks To Distract From Blight

The project to turn dumpsters into art went nowhere, so at today’s Tucson’s City Council meeting, councilmembers will learn about a proposal to accomplish more of nothing by allowing private parties the opportunity to turn City traffic signal controller cabinets into art projects.

According to the City, supports hope the project will occupy the eye rather than the rampant blight resulting from graffiti vandalism.

Under the proposal, sponsoring entities would be responsible for selection of an artist, creating an art design, and obtaining a letter of support from the registered, active neighborhood association where the art resides, according to the City’s website.

Sponsors also would take full responsibility for all costs of the projects because the City is broke.

Ward 1 and Ward 6 staff, who obviously have nothing better to do, have been working with the Tucson Department of Transportation and the Tucson Pima Arts Council public art program to create the pilot project, according to the City’s website.
