Tucson Teen Killed In Golf Links Road Collision

On March 23, 2016, around 11:12 p.m., Tucson Police officers responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover collision in the 2700 block of South Golf Links Road. Upon arrival, officers located Daniel Monarez Yanez, age 16 on the ground away from the vehicle. The officers immediately began rendering aid utilizing their Individual First Aid Kits (IFAK). Members from the Tucson Fire Department arrived on scene and transported Monarez Yanez to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

However, shortly after arrival, Daniel Monarez Yanez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. They interviewed witnesses and collected evidence. They were able to determine the driver of a 1998 Honda Civic was westbound Golf Links Road in the median lane stopped for a red light at South Swan Road, behind another vehicle. When the light turned green, both drivers accelerated rapidly through the intersection. At one point, both drivers changed lanes to the middle lane. Near a curve in the road, the driver of the Honda, Monarez Yanez then changed lanes back to the median lane where he lost control of the vehicle and struck the raised median. The vehicle rolled over and landed upside down in the westbound lanes of Golf Links Road. It does not appear Monarez Yanez was wearing his seatbelt. Several witnesses stopped and assisted. The driver of the other vehicle continued westbound and was later contacted by police.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME.
