Letter to the Editor: Mexican American Studies a discipline?

Dear Editor,

Roberto Rodriguez’ response to Doug MacEachern’s MAS concern reads thick of disdain discernibly aimed at singling out many Arizona Anglos.

How unfortunate that introducing provocative words as “anti-Mexican-American”, “MAS critics”, “non scholars”, “anti-civil rights”, “denigrates the discipline …of indoctrinating students via burritos” are necessary to conjure up illusions of prejudice for misguided conscripts to chase.

Then comes the impudent “In a state that has produced the likes of …it is easy to see why MacEachern embraces that same philosophy”.

Can no one discern this intricate lacing of words as “code” intended to invoke apparitions of oppression by phantom bigotry? Do such word choices have purpose beyond insinuating racism?

Truth (apparently) be damned. As perception can be made to convince, simply by implying, the message is clearly intended for the under-informed to blindly consume without regard to the consequences. It is then meant to be wielded to stigmatize, by peer pressure, a broad Anglo demographic as harboring sentiments of disregard for others.

Bigotry alleged becomes an I.E.D. in which the detonation arbiter is the individual clenching the race card. Where the potential damage becomes the least of concerns than does the intimidation yielded and inflicted.

MAS, a discipline?
