Wrong-way driver self-surrenders to DPS detectives

age 68, the driver in a deadly wrong-way crash that occurred on Sunday, May 18, 2014, self-surrendered to detectives from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Vehicular Crimes Unit (VCU). Murphy is facing two counts of 2nd degree murder as well as other charges.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 18, 2014, Murphy drove a pick-up truck in the wrong direction on the San Tan 202. At the time, Murphy had her 9-year-old grandson in the vehicle. Around 1:48 a.m., Murphy collided head-on with another vehicle driven by a couple from Mesa, Michael Ruquet, 25 and Ashley Adea, 20. VCU detectives believe that at the time, Murphy was under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication.

The collision, which occurred between Higley and Ray Roads in Gilbert, resulted in the death of Mr. Ruquet and Ms. Adea. Additionally, the minor child was transported from the scene to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Murphy sustained injuries as well requiring a substantial recovery period.

In addition to the two counts of 2nd degree murder, Murphy was booked on charges of aggravated assault, eleven counts of endangerment, child abuse, two counts of possession of narcotics and criminal damage.
