Unlicensed driver kills Tucson bicyclist

On April 20, 2015, just after 8:30 a.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers located 76-year-old Lawrence Lacroix suffering trauma.

Mr. Lacroix was transported to Banner University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries at that time. On Wednesday, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Investigation on scene revealed the driver of a 2003 Mazda 323 was traveling eastbound on Silverlake Road approaching Cottonwood Lane. The bicyclist was also eastbound on Silverlake Road. The driver made a southbound turn onto Cottonwood Lane in front of Mr. Lacroix. Mr. Lacroix was unable to stop in time and struck the rear fender of the Mazda. Mr. Lacroix was wearing a helmet.

The 36-year-old driver of the Mazda was uninjured and remained on scene. The driver was cited for making an unsafe turn and for not having a valid operator’s license.
